Any investigation, especially examination performed after a building is completed, can bring surprises. If you absent yourself, you are taking on an extra agreement. You are accepting the technical, cost-related, and aesthetic choices made based in your absence on best-guess but potentially inaccurate interpretation of your wishes. This applies if you ask for a look at your rental property because your tenant expressed concern. It's equally true at your house if you find you have to run out.
You'll get a call in the case of an unreasonable delay (more than 10 or 15 minutes) except in the rare case when this would require talking on the phone while driving.
By making an appointment for a site visit, you are agreeing to pay for a minimum of one hour of time, unless you get in contact a day in advance to reschedule or cancel. (You'll be dealing with a human, so if there's a crisis, you might drop a stitch and neglect calling. Once you've caught your breath, communicate!)
